Solana vs. Ethereum: Eight Parameters Compared by Crypto Expert

Cryptocurrency commentator Jacques Dwyer has compared the speed, security and state of decentralization in the two largest crypto ecosystems.

Solana (SOL) and Ethereum (ETH), the two most important blockchain ecosystems, have their own great features for dApp development. Jacques Dwyer of the HiveMapper Foundation has laid out some of the advantages and disadvantages of both blockchains in 2025.

Compared to Ethereum (ETH), the world's first smart contract platform, Solana (SOL) has faster transaction speeds, better UX and lower transaction costs. This analysis was presented by cryptocurrency expert Jacques Dwyer at his X yesterday, March 14, 2025.

On the contrary, Ethereum (ETH) outperforms its main rival when it comes to the scale of the DeFi segment, ecosystem development, security, developer support and state of decentralization. At the same time, Dwyer admitted that both blockchains were created with different positions and rely on different communities in Web3.

According to tracker DefiLama, Ethereum (ETH) has accumulated $46.11 billion in total value locked in 1,141 on-chain applications, while Solana (SOL) has only reached $7 billion locked in 225 dApps.

Meanwhile, Ethereum (ETH) earned only $526,549 in daily fees last week, while Solana (SOL)’s daily fees reached nearly $1 million. Additionally, Solana (SOL) is very “young” as it was launched in 2020, five years after its main rival Ethereum (ETH).

Commentators on Dwyer’s tweet acknowledged that both Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL) have not performed well in current cycles in terms of cryptocurrency prices.

The second-largest cryptocurrency, Ethereum (ETH), is trading at $1,916, its lowest level since mid-November 2023. Ethereum's price has dropped 60.53% from its all-time high recorded in November 2021. So far in this cycle, Ethereum (ETH) has failed to get anywhere close to its price highs.

Ethereum (ETH) and Bitcoin (BTC) have fared even worse. This week, ETH/BTC has dropped below 0.0225 twice, which equates to 44.44 Ether per Bitcoin.

ETH/BTC price activity has not been this painful for Ethereum (ETH) bulls in nearly five years.

Solana (SOL) is trading at $133.28, up 54.65% from its all-time high set two months ago.
